Today we are finishing up our project. We conducted some surveys in the weeks past and believe we are a formidable opponent in the lives of the cheesemakers. Excellent, well done. We hope this project will save the turtles, whales, fish, sharks, land creatures, and dolphinmen. Thanks for the support. I'd like to take this time to say thank you very berry much to Anonymous and Dani. These two STRANGERS found us and supported us, yayyyyyy friends. It's been a while since I could say that. My last friends tied me up and left me for dead in the wilderness of the La Havana. Long story. Moving on, we hope shipping containers will stop falling into the big ol' blue so we don't die. Kthx.

P.S to make clear, I'm not a bucket. I'm not obsessed with cat pictures they're just cute and fuzzy and cute and are my escape to the horrors shipping containers do to my water of the world. :D bye now.

Today it's just me (Alicyn), Gabby, and John in the office today.
I have no idea where Edjmin and Andrea went.

So kids, and especially this person leaving us comments, here's our update. I broke the website. D= I tried, but html is hard and so I ruined my life. I'm going to get started on a new one and hopefully I won't fail nearly as much.

Continuing on, our project has taken a turn into a new area. We've decided upon two possible remedies to the problem of overboard shipping:

1. is adding flexible solar panels that would power a radio signal that can be picked up by radar to allow ships to change course and not hit them and give a transmitting signal for the shipping companies to retrieve their fallen merchandise.

2. is to create a new shipping container module that has sturdier beams. The reason for this is because, the shipping containers collapse on each other, and the ones on top tip over the edge. If the shipping containers no longer collapsed, we could potentially solve this entire problem.

=D We're putting our brains to work and are especially enjoying our opposable thumbs. =x!

Today in EAST...the safe shipping team is working on dividing the works into categories that support the position, those against the position, and those offereing alternative stances on the issue of shipping containers.

The way containers are held

Today we learned that when vessels are built, the securing of the containers are usually built along with the vessel. Bottom foundations are the equipments that allow the conatainers to slide into place and these things include the cloverleaf and dovetails. These names comes from the apperances of these locks and are usually held with twistlocks on each corner of the container. These all go according to The International Maritime Organization, which requires that all vessels be provided with a “Cargo Securing Manual.” Most of the container overboards aren't from the gear, but from the collapse of container frames due to racking or other influence on the racks.

On our update so far on our project, we are working on the literary review.

Today we are further exploring the dangers of fallen shipping containers!

What happens to these containers you ask?

During a storm or because of poor chain practices, these shipping containers fall off ships, which is hazardous to our ecosystem. The things that spill out of them are often plastics that add to the disaster and trash buildup in the North Pacific Gyre.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THIS OVERBOARD CARGO?
An 8-foot by 40-foot container which can carry up to 58,000 pounds of cargo, might hold 10,000 shoes, 17,000 hockey gloves, or a million pieces of Lego play pieces.

Millions of plastic items could be released into the ocean. They then attract pollutants and then break down to smaller pieces that are consumed by sea life.

How many shipping containers are lost at sea each year?

It is estimated that over 10.000 shipping containers are lost at sea each year. The yearly financial loss due to the overboard of these containers has been estimated to the billions.

Today at Clark Manget High School it's a mini day! Whoohoo! Before this short day ends, Edjmin, Gabby, John, Alicyn, and myself, the Safe Shipping INC. team, had to do some research on, what else, SHIPPING CONTAINERSSS!!!

So, we found a site that talks about a shipping container that was lost in 1992. This container carried a crazy amount of....RUBBER DUCKIES! Yes that's right, the sea animals now have toys to play with when they bathe. Anyway, it talks about where thses ducks have traveled to. On July 15, 2007 in England, one was found on the beach by an old woman walking her dog. She sent it to the manufacturer, The First Years, and received $100!

YAY FOR THE DUCKIES!

Today! In Science Research Class, 3rd Period at the esteemed Clark Magnet High School, group Safe Shipping is formulating a plot to save the world. =DDD

Today we have come up with a research plan to further our knowledge on the task at hand. We're hoping to come up with all the pros and cons of the situation, find out the opinions of the experts in this field of study, and discover if there is anything currently being done to solve/help the problem of shipping containers falling into our pretty oceans.

We're also working on getting a website up and running with pretty pictures and facts to read up on. The URL will be posted sometime in a later post, so keep on checking up on us. Thanks for your time, please come again. :]

Today in Science Research, sometimes known as East class, we further fine tuned our plan for the Lexus Environmental Challenge.

Our project mainly focuses on the cartridges that are lost at sea. Our idea is that we attach a device that uses solar energy to transmit a signal at a frequency that radars can pick up. This technology will help sailors/pirates avoid the floating, hazardous metal containers. It will most likely tear the hull of the ship causing it to sink and impersonating the titanic >:o
